The Verandas.

This post was originally written by Sea White. Used with permission.
Greetings! Here's a post a little different from whatever my version of normal is.

Some very good friends of mine have gathered together to make some wonderfully poetic, unique, great music. They call themselves The Verandas. Their sound is a unique twist on an almost indie/folk kind of groove. Very pleasing to the ear with very thoughtful, eloquent lyrics, it's obvious this group of poets has nowhere to go but up. With a song in their heart, stanzas and verses in their head, and a genuine, warm smile on their face, The Verandas leave their audience with wonderful memories, a huge smile and all around good vibes.

The first time I got to experience the band was at a backyard concert. With their friends and family surrounding them, it was a wonderful show. Very relaxed and an intimate feeling between the audience and the band, the energy flow was perfect. Between songs, they were very conversational, with great stories spritzed with laughter, cozy-ing up to the audience in the best possible way. I have nothing but great things to say about these guys.

Here's a direct link to their band site, where you can go check out their great music, their story, like them on Facebook and other social media and more.

Good sounds, good vibes, great people. The Verandas, everyone. The Verandas Website

Mornings are Hard

Mornings are evil. Evil things that really should not be as hard as they are for some evil reason.

Bones and I are not morning people. At all. Both of us are grumpy people in the morning and require a good 15-30 minutes to ourselves before maybe being the normal people we are during the day. Me even more so. Especially if it's early. Bones has gotten obnoxiously better about this though and takes about 5-10 minutes to regain proper societial interactive skills. Again me not so much.

So when both of us are required to get up in the wee hours of the day (and by wee, I mean before 7) we tend not to be the happiest bunch.

So about a week ago - when I began this bloody post and then promptly forgot about it until now - both of us were required to be an hour away from home by 8 in the morning. Which meant leaving around 7, preferably 6:30-6:45 because, you know, you like to have some panic time just in case it's needed. Which in turn, meant waking up. Around 6. Actually 545. In the morning. During the summer. On a day I didn't have to go to work.

Did I mention I really hate mornings?

Long story short, we get there, I'm grumpy and sleepy and a little dopey (No dwarves we harmed in the making of this story) and spend the rest of the day there.

I swear there was a point to this post, but now I just think that it's this:

Mornings are hard. And no one should have to get up before 9am. And when I become Commanding Empress of the World, everyone will get to sleep in until then.

Sea White: A Story From My Pilates Mat

Greetings! I've written down my recent little story about sweat, theatre and laziness. Go take a look! I would post this on my actual page, but I've already written it once and didn't want to copy and paste. Although it is my own writing, I realize. Anyway, go read it and tell me what you think!

Sea White: A Story From My Pilates Mat: I have a little story to tell you today. Over the last week or so, my schedule has picked up tremendously. We're down to one car right ...

Until next time!

Late Night Ramblings

1-2-3 GO as Bones would say! But she didn't, 'cause she's asleep! Or at least I think she is... I dunno~

Do you guys ever just, like, stay up and think about things? Not even on purpose, though. Just, like, as you're falling asleep and you lay there in the dark and suddenly you have everything figured out. All that shit that's messing with your life? You suddenly know exactly how to fix it.

Or you just understood that joke your friend told at the bar - wasn't it funny? HAHAHAHA ohmygods you're such an idiot how did you not get that earlier?

Or you suddenly have the motivation to lose that ten pounds you were technically supposed to have lost before swimsuit season started. Running sounds like a great idea! Let's set the alarm so we can get up early and go for a run and beat the oppressive heat that is July in the Midwest! But really, let's be honest you'll probably hit snooze 50 million times so there's no point in getting up that early. Motivation gone.

Or you spend the next hour thinking about how exactly awesome Harry Potter really was - IS - and how if you ever have kids they are totally reading that shit. Except you're gunna read it to them, like your dad read it to you, with different voices and everything. So you start practicing your Dobby voice, making it different from your Moaning Myrtle voice, which is different from your Malfoy voice (although book two they sound strangely similar, you discover), which then in turn is different from the noises you make for Aragog.

Or you ponder if souls really are reincarnated. And if they are, how old is your soul? Are you a new soul? Or have you been around for a really long time? You don't really feel that old but you do have more patience than most of your peers. Maybe that's a you thing? Or maybe the weird dreams you've been having lately are memories of your past life or even glimpses of your future life. The future has flying fish-motorcyles?

You suddenly have the BEST IDEA for a book. Where the hell do you keep your pens. Gods, there was one right here when you turned the light off. Stupid trolls. Better have stayed away from your socks, even though you wear them mismatched for that sole purpose. Seriously though, PEN WHERE DID YOU GO?!

You review conversations in your head from a week ago. You were so clever in that pro-feminist argument against that one guy in line at the grocery store. Except your comeback against your brother was really juvenile after he criticized your cooking skills again. Mental note: work on comebacks.

You scroll through random shit on your phone, suddenly very concerned with the bee population. Bees are really important. They're what scientists call an "indicator species" which mean that they help determine if environments are suitable to live in. If lots of bees die, that means everything else will die soon too. Protect the bees!

You watch three episodes of Courage the Cowardly Dog on your laptop because, holy shit, you haven't seen that show in forever! Man that brings back memories. Wonder if the cat episode is easy to find. Oooo or the gangster foot one! Yikes or the creepy king Tut one.

You start to crave a vanilla ice cream cone with LOTS of sprinkles. The rainbow kind - not the chocolate. But like soft serve ice cream and the really really good stuff too. Like Mr. Softy's from New York. The kind that tastes like you're licking a cloud. Not that you would actually know what a cloud tastes like, but you've got a good imagination and you're willing to bet money that it tastes like a Mr. Softy's vanilla ice cream cone.

You wonder over the correct grammar of the word physics. Is it plural? Or singular? Can it just be physic? Or is it always physics with an s?

And then you wake up the next morning totally hating yourself and your brain for being so stupid as to not actually fall asleep on time. And really, who thinks about these things anyways?

Superstition.

Greetings! Hopefully you're familiar with the Stevie Wonder song "Superstition." If you're not familiar with it, I'm sure you've probably heard it somewhere and just don't know the name. Or if you actually haven't heard it ever before, I invite you to go listen to it. Why am I bringing this up? Simply put: because it's Friday. But it's Friday the sixth, not Friday the Thirteenth, what gives? This song is just an any Friday kind of song. Why? Oh, let me explain.
In high school, both Rocket and I were in band. Obviously I continued instrumental music and she did not, but that's beside the point. The point is we were both in band. That entails concert band, full orchestra, marching band, jazz band and the like. We went to a large high school, and the band room was home base for the (dedicated) band kids. Makes sense, yes? Indeed. We had a very large band program, in fact, the entire music program was huge at our high school. Thus, the band room would need to be spacious enough for all of us band geeks to have plenty of room for lockers, many chairs, instrument cases, instruments, and music stands. During the week, all of the chairs and music stands would be left out (in "formation," kind of). On Fridays, the chairs and music stands needed to be stacked up, racked up and moved out of the way so the wonderful custodians could (try to) clean all of our spit and whatever else off of the industrial-grade carpet. As you can imagine, there were quite a few chairs and music stands. On Friday afternoons, whoever was still hanging around in the band room got to "Rack & Stack." There were usually plenty of people hanging about in the band room after school, especially on Fridays. As we would begin the process of "Rack & Stack," we would play this same CD every Friday. The "Rack & Stack CD." Among some great classic funk and soul type tunes, the first track was "Superstition." That's the real reason that song is one of the best Friday songs ever. I got ultra-used to it vibrating my ear drums every Friday, it makes hearing it on any other day just seem wrong.
There's my Friday-song story. Also, probably the only time you'll hear me say anything almost positive about my high school. If you want a positive outlook on the school we went to, talk to Rocket. I found the whole thing completely bogus. But! It's Friday, and "Superstition" came on my iPhone's shuffle earlier. Works for me! What's your Friday-song? Other than the disgustingly revolting "Friday" song. Tell me in the comments below, Facebook, Twitter and Google+.

Story Time!

Gather round, nuggets. Rocket's got a story.

So, currently, I'm taking care of a friend's pet while they're away on vacation. On my way over I remember I need kitty litter. So I make a side trip and end up driving down a road I don't normally go down. Nothing sketchy or anything like that. It's just not a usual road. And the only reason that's important is because on my normal roads I know where the cops are.

Now, I'll admit, I'm a bit of a speed demon. Speed limits are kinda sorta suggestions to me. I don't go like 25 over or anything, but 5 over is bare minimum for me. Unless there's a cop behind me. Or my mother's in the car. I like going fast. My brother swears that I told him once it's impolite to drive the speed limit. I personally don't remember ever saying that, but I'm also not denying that I did. Anyways that is why one day when my wonderful pick-up that I adore bites the rust-stained dust that's looming over the horizon, I'll upgrade to a gorgeous convertible with a six-cylinder engine that purrs and roars when I kick her into gear. *sighs dreamily*

Anyways, because of my need for the buzz I get when zipping down the pavement, I have made a mental map for myself of all the little nooks and crannies the cops like to hang around on the streets I normally cruse. But because of my adventure onto an unfamiliar street, I got pulled over. Me. Pulled over. First time since I started driving that this has ever happened.

So I'm sitting in my truck, trying to imagine why I've been pulled over. For once, I was actually going slightly under the speed limit (purely because I was trying to remember where my turn was, but ssshhhhh), my tags were up to date, it was before dark so my lights weren't needed. So now I'm really nervous. Well anyways, the officer strolls over to the window and the conversation goes something like this:

Me *politely*: Evening officer.

Cop: Miss, do you know why I pulled you over?

Me: *shakes head*

Cop: You were driving recklessly.

Me: Sir?

Cop: You only had one hand on the wheel.

OK. So. Seriously? This guy was so bored he pulled me over, not because I was breaking any traffic laws or anything. But because I only had one hand on the wheel. Which, OK, is not really proper driving technique but I kinda have to.

I drive a stick shift.

After explaining this to the police officer and showing him the inside of my truck so he could examine my gear shift and clutch pedal (wow that sounds bad), I was let off with a warning. Not an apology. A WARNING. Because I was driving a stick shift vehicle.

All I gotta say is, the cops in my area are weird sometimes.

Lists.

Greetings. You know what I'm a huge fan of? Making lists. When is the best time to make lists? In advance. Why? To be able to cross things off the list. When? In advance.

I have always found proactive-list-making to be an astoundingly useful skill. Grocery lists, packing lists, to-do lists, class lists, school supply lists, moving lists, dorm lists, and any other kind of lists are wonderful things. You know what's even better than the list itself? Crossing things off the list.

I find if I'm ever in a bind or planning ahead for something, making a list is a very good thing to do. Typically, I'm planning ahead for something. Hypothetically, if I was moving to a new living environment, I would start compiling thoughts and items on a list. Once I got most of the working list together, I could then begin to start completing tasks/acquiring items which were on the list, so I could then begin crossing them off said list.

And to complete my post about crossing things off of my list, I can cross off making a list about a list.

Have questions or tips about lists, making lists or crossing things off lists?
Tweet me about it. @HumerusApollo #BonesList

Until next time!

Powerpuff Exercise Game

Bones and I like to watch "The Powerpuff Girls" - although, let's be honest, who doesn't? It's an awesome show! Well, maybe boys, or kids that just found the idea of five-year-old superheroes weird.... (you're weird!)

Well, anyways we were watching PPG and messing around on the Internet, when I decided to check if there was a drinking game for the show. Because if there's one thing I know about college students, it's that they love old shows and they seldom pass up a chance to drink. And sure enough, we found one!

Now, Bones and I don't really like to drink. But what we do like to do is exercise! Bones just posted about her spin class and I play softball on weekends and run in the mornings. We like staying active.

So, we converted the PPG drinking game into a PPG exercise game! Rules are simple: anytime one of the specified events happen, you do ten push-ups. Or sit-ups. Or plank for ten seconds. Whatever. It's still in the planning stages - we'll let you know how it all evens out.

Here's the list:

Bones instagramed this the other day, but we've added a few things since then! Notice the nice neat handwriting Bones has, and then there's mine... *sigh*.

Of course, you are welcome to pick and choose and even add things if you think it'd work better! These are just the ones we liked and decided to go with. For instance, I love Buttercup, but I'm really not a Blossom fan. If you think she's not being a bossy little know-it-all, you don't have to do ten push-ups for that.

So, once again, the day is saved thanks to the Powerpuff Girls showing you exercise can come with good ol' fashion childhood memories!

Earworms suck...

(Prepare yourselves. I'm bored and now have the means to ramble).

So sometime last week - possibly Thursday - Bones and I were hanging out, as we do, with some of our comrades. Just lazing about, having a grand ol' time doing whatever we pleased, when suddenly, a wild Bones' boyfriend appeared! (He was already there, but for plot's sake just imagine he popped up.) Being a music major - I think, at least, pretty sure that's what he does - he automatically sits down at the piano, which was conveniently placed in the vicinity, and begins to play a melody. After a couple of bars, he proudly tells us he's figured out how to play AWOLNATION's "Sail" and then proceeds to play the song. The entirety of it.

And it's been stuck in my head ever since.

It's Monday night. I haven't seen this kid since Wednesday, Thursday, whatever the hell day that was. But since that day this song has been haunting me.

Playing at work

On my favorite station in my truck

In the mall

At the movies

On a commercial on TV

My cousin humming it

IT'S FRAKKING EVERYWHERE.

So obviously the only solution is to either A) listen to it and dislodge the earworm or B) shut myself off from any source of mainstream music sources.

I did both. Neither are working.

The thing is, it's not a particularly enjoyable song for me. Ok, yeah kinda catchy and the blaring of the, what? Bass? Guitar? I have no idea what's making that sound, is kinda neat, BUT IT'S FRAKKING ANNOYING! So the fact that it's just in my head for the entire weekend is driving me up the frakking wall.

So here we are Monday night, and what am I doing? Sitting alone, in our home, waiting for Bones to come home from her jazz thingy, eating Chips and Salsa for dinner because it's 10:30 and I can't cook, and blaring the stupid song on repeat. And it will be on repeat until Bones comes home so she can revel in my misery with me.

Which now that I think about it, I actually have no idea when that will be...

... It's gunna be a looooong night

Twitter Issues.

Greetings! As you know, Humerus Apollo is now on Twitter. I set this account up last night, all of 18 hours ago. I designed the page, and set up a great profile and everything. I went to check on it this morning, and I find that the account has been suspended. What does that entail? Essentially being off Twitter for no reason at all, not able to access anything on the account and not being able to follow or be followed. I checked all of the "Twitter Rules," and I've broken none of them. So, I "appealed" the suspension on the account. That involves sending an email to Twitter via your twitter account, and waiting for them to do something about it. That's where we are right now, everyone. In Twitter jail, waiting to be bailed out. I'll let you know how that progresses. Maybe we'll just end up making a new, different Twitter and be "sneaky" about it. Is it even possible to be sneaky when social media is involved? I guess we'll see what happens. For now, go like us on Facebook and check out our postings on Instagram.

We can not be contained! The voices of the people will not be silenced! Viva la Revolution!

Thank you, Rocket. Anyways, flock to the working social networks and spread the word(s).

Until next time!

Ninja Kitty!

So about a year or two ago (Bones says two, but I think it's only been one) I created a little cartoon thing. It was originally my way of communicating to my best friend because I hadn't seen her for give or take a week. This cartoon eventually became a constant in our lives and sorta became the mascot of our friendship. So we figured, why not make him the mascot of our blog, too?

Ladies and Gentlemen, I present to you Ninja Kitty

This particular sketch is one of Ninja Kitty's first appearances - hence the poorly done art. But nowadays, he's a handsome little devil. And now he's part of our blog

Expect to see more of this little guy soon. He's important!

Traveling Blog.

Greetings, this is Bones. This is a "traveling blog" post. Here's the thing, though: we haven't traveled anywhere. Some friends of ours are in New York City right now, and they sent us a photo of our blog "traveling" to the NYC Apple store. I'm going to figure out how to make this "traveling blog" an official element in Humerus Apollo, starting now. We'll post photos of the Traveling Humerus Apollo and you can send us photos of places you've taken Humerus Apollo, possibly even on Twitter, maybe even Instagram. I'll keep you posted on how I'm going about that.
For now, here's Humerus Apollo making an appearance in the NYC Apple Store:

What Are We Going to Write About?

Okay, so, hi. Blogs are hard. So we've established design (we should make a checklist, though), fonts, what else have we done? No, really though. I'm just going to type what you say, and what I say and change fonts accordingly. Sounds fine. Stop complaining about my font. Should we explain our mission? Do we have a mission? To entertain ourselves and maybe others. To make money. Says you. I'm just in it for the fame and glory. Extension of our mission: to boldly go where every college student has gone before. See, I think I'm clever, but not really. I just make shit up. Is it okay to say that on a blog? "Make shit up?" Yeah, it's our blog. Changing fonts is hard. No sleeps. I'm not sleeping. Should we make paragraphs for every time we change fonts, to make it look like actual dialogue on the page, or would that take up too much space on the page? We are literally just typing conversations, all y'all's can deal with it. "All y'all's" - is that even correct grammar? No. Oh gods, and I call myself an English major. Is "gods" capitalized? No. But English is capitalized. Yes.

Should we like say actual stuff? It won't let me indent or tab over. That's fine, just separate it. Okay, now what? Maybe this will be so weird that it'll actually work. Maybe it'll be so weird that nobody will want to talk to us. I'm cynical. Oh, it's getting light outside. It looks kind of dark out, still, actually. I hate how it won't let you scroll down on the page. Should we talk about why we wanted to do this? Yes! Okay so, why? It all started with your idea of getting paid to blog. It was all your idea, Bones. But getting paid to blog means you actually have to have followers, which we don't actually have yet. Baby steps, baby steps. And to clarify, this is purely stream of train of thought due to spelling issues. We just coined a new phrase, and I'm going to use it from now on. No evil laughter on collaborative posts. Now we're setting rules? That's not stream of train of thought. But why evil laughter, its' not - Because it's awesome. I'm getting faster at this font changing thing. Okay, so. You should write a paragraph about yourself, and I'll write a paragraph about yourself. So, you're going to write a paragraph about me, and I'm going to write a paragraph about me, and we won't talk about you at all. That feeds my ego nicely. Or we could just talk about ourselves in a streaming paragraph. But that's so many font changes. Well, then I can just monologue me, center stage, talking to the audience, I am now Hamlet. Am I allowed to evil laugh now? No. You're no fun. My kingdom for an evil laugh! I still do not understand that. You should.

So. I'm Rocket and I live with my roommate, Bones. We're both college students, broke as shit, which is what started this whole shenanigan thing. Shenanigan thing? What started this whole shenanigan thing. We figured why not? We'll talk about ourselves, put documented evidence that we have conversations that make absolutely no sense. Ummmmm. Personal stuff about me..umm..I'm an English major, which means I write, and yet I'm torturing my poor roommate for making her type this. I like books, I can't cook, and I'm currently working as a concession stand attendee, so expect lots of bitching about that. But you know, Bones works in retail, so there will be equal amounts of bitching/pointing and laughing. Other than that, I think I'm funny. Hilarious, actually. But I understand some people might not think so.

Oh hey, guess I'm typing now. Bones is checking up on baseball scores (we like baseball too. Funny, a Red Sox and a Yankees fan living together and somehow we manage not to kill each other come October).

Oh look it's sunrise. You know, sunrise is kinda a cool phenomenon. Although it's kind of a misnomer since the sun isn't actually rising - the earth is turning, so shouldn't it be called "Earth Turn"? But then there'd be no discernible night and day. Although, I guess you could just call it "Earth Turn" and "Earth Turn" unless you call them different things, I guess.

Bones is a scienc-y person and likes to just go off on science tangents. It doesn't help that we've been up all night, planning this blog/watching Powerpuff Girls and Xena so we're both kinda loopy and tired and shit.

Coffee! I want coffee. Do you want coffee? Or do you want tea? Tea, for me. (I'm British at heart, I swear. Bones thrives off coffee, but me I love a nice mug of Earl Grey). *Crashing in kitchen* Oops. Don't break the dishwasher! I didn't! That was the mugs anyways. Don't break those either! And stop talking to the coffee maker! It can't talk back. But it's flashing it's light at me and that counts as communication!

So hey, I guess we have a post now. And we just spent like the past hour or so making this post and talking back and forth about it. I swear, we will actually get around to talking about actual things. But maybe not. Maybe this blog is doomed to us rambling and stream of train of thought conversations. That wouldn't be awful. Depends on who you ask I guess. I like it. I like it too! Well there you go then. So we're going to have our drinks and maybe think about about sleep. Pft. Sleep is for the weak. It just wastes so much time. If I could just stay up all the time that would be wonderful. Well then maybe not sleep. But definitely drinks. Does that wrap it up? Do we have a witty sign off? Do we need a witty sign off? I don't think so. I mean, we just kinda jumped into it. Why can't we just jump out? Okay. I'm going to think of one though. You don't have to use it now though. It's late/early-ish. *holds up book* I thought these things were huge. Oh gods, we're not talking about 50 Shades of Grey. That definitely not blog worthy material. Jumping out now. Until next time!
